EPC Players Make National ODP Camp

Our Chicago Fire Camps & Training Affiliate will hold tryouts for its Summer 2013 Elite Performance Center (EPC) on Sunday, April 28th, at the Chicago Fire's Toyota Park.

The EPC is a 7-week training program, centered around the Super Y summer league, designed to give elite-level players from clubs in Illinois and surrounding states the chance to train, improve, and compete against the best Academy teams in the midwest.

Accomplished coaches Ashley Wormall and Tom Nevill return to select and coach four teams this June/July, at U12, U13, U14, and U15.

Last year their EPC teams had 7 players invited to the National ODP Camp at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida for a week of intensive training with national ODP coaches and select players from around the U.S.:

Anthony and Nick Markanich from the U12s; Leo Orocozo from the U13s; Asanti Herring and Gerardo Nunez from the U14s; and Oswaldo Gutierrez and Gerard Toohey from the U15s.

EPC Head Coach Wormall said, “it's a great honor for these players to be recognized for their performances on the pitch, but that's only half the work these boys put in. All of our EPC players were 110% committed to our program and to their development as soccer players. And this summer Coach Nevill and I intend to increase the number of players invited to the ODP camp and have all four of our teams push for a national playoff berth."

During the ODP Camp week the players worked with US national coaches, learned in  classroom sessions, and scrimmaged in front of college coaches and academy scouts from around the world.

At the end of the Camp players were evaluated and assessed and 2 select teams were announced per age groups. Asanti Herring was placed on the US National Select B team for the U15/U16 age groups. Goalkeeper Gerardo Nunez was ranked 5th of out 21 goalkeepers at the U15/U16 age group after conceding the fewest goals at the camp. Oswaldo Gutierrez finished with high reviews and was named as a first reserve after a number of impressive play making appearances, chipping in with a number of assists and a goal.  Both Leo Orocozo and Nick Markavich also had great reviews from the coaches with both players being very influential for their teams.

U14 goalkeeper Gerardo Nunez said, “Being able to participate in the ODP camp was a huge honor for myself and the guys. I would do anything to get back next year and I will continue to work hard to make that happen. Thanks to Coach Ash and Coach Tom for the hard work and training they put in for us, and the EPC for giving me this opportunity."
