From Shelton to Scotland

Ian Murray named Dumbarton Manager

Two weeks ago Ian Murray was coaching in the U.S. at Shelton (CT) Youth Soccer Organization. This week he will become player-manager for Scottish First-Division side Dumbarton.

Murray's new position builds on a storied career in Scottish football that includes spells with former Scottish Premier League side Rangers and English Premier League's Norwich City. But he made his legend at Hibernian, where he earned six international caps over ten years and was named captain.

Murray was recently honored with a testimonial game to commemorate his decade at Easter Road. He reflected on his time there:

“There’s been a few highlights, I’ve had good bad and indifferent times, but obviously the 10 Testimonial Dinner is a highlight for me... I played in the cup final at nineteen years of age... Derby games, even getting beat, they are all special moments... certain goals... but if I had to pick one highlight it would probably be my debut. To play one game or to play 100 games, at that stage no-one can tell, but to get that chance was fantastic.”

Shelton's youth players were treated to Ian's passion for the game this fall. YESsoccer recruited him to help lead the SYSO fall training season.

"I had been talking to Ian since last year, looking for the right coaching opportunity for him with one of our partner clubs. We were delighted that we could place him in Shelton where he was able to share his talent and knowledge of the game with so many young players," said YESsoccer's Matt Brown. "We wish him nothing but the best at Dumbarton."

Dumbarton's chief executive Gilbert Lawrie said that Murray was the winning candidate for manager in a spirited competition.

"Ian's playing background, together with his burning desire to succeed as a manager, fits perfectly with our own views, especially with respect to youth development," said Lawrie.
